“Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
– C. S. Lewis
Physical pain is a signal that is sent to the brain when there has been an injury to the body. It is a message that tells you to give attention to the source of the pain. According to C.S. Lewis, pain is simply, “God’s megaphone.”
Several years ago, I was experiencing intense pain in my abdomen. I went to my doctor and the first question he asked me was, “Where does it hurt? Where is the pain coming from?” The pain was used to diagnose my situation. I was immediately sent to the hospital to be prepped for surgery. My appendix was at risk of bursting, which would have sent infection throughout my body. It was the megaphone of pain that saved my life. It refused to allow me to ignore what was broken and damaged on the inside of me. The pain was relentless because it would not rest until the broken was made whole. It wasn’t long after surgery that I was up and about my business. The pain was gone after it served its purpose.
The pain that comes from the trauma and broken places of your life is God’s signal that reveals where you are broken. The emotional and psychological pain that you are experiencing serves to diagnose and demand an explanation for behaviors. In essence, the pain you’re feeling right now may save your life. Pain is given no gratitude and has never received a thank you card. However, there are few things that have served you better.
